Website promotion ploys, tips, and tricks
Web promotion has gurus that try to spell out the basics of Internet promotion, but if they knew the basics so well, they would diversify and promote all sorts of products online instead of just selling their one eBook. One way to spot a charlatan is to look at how much money he's made promoting Internet products and then judge for yourself if he is a web promotion guru.
The number of scam artists posing as web promotion geniuses is enough to put anyone off using any advice that they find on the internet. Indeed, caution is a good stance to take when people are selling a ‘secret formula’ that promises to deliver seemingly sky high returns, far beyond the amount of work that is actually done. It is perhaps worth remembering a golden rule when confronted with these situations- If it looks too good to be true, it usually is.
Time and time again, if you conduct a Google search looking for ways to promote your website, you will find page after page of search results filled with websites that claim to be able to send thousands of visitors to your website every day, or people selling eBooks which purport to have some kind of guaranteed formula for bringing traffic to a website, and making you a millionaire. It is a sad fact of life that there is such a huge amount of people out there who want nothing more than to get their hands on your money for as little effort as possible. As mentioned earlier, if these people selling the eBooks were truly so successful, why would they want to give away the secrets to their success? From their point of view, it would make no sense to reduce their own chances to make money by increasing the number of competitors using the same techniques in the marketplace. Logically then, it would be safe to assume that the secret formula is usually little more than some freely available information thrown together in a nicely presented package, perhaps with some specific advice that may or may not be useful to you- in more than one case following this advice can actually be a huge waste of time and even damage your website promoting efforts. ‘Black hat’ web promoting techniques involve exploiting loopholes in the way that search engines index their results. Some people may advise using these methods, which should be avoided when possible. Although they will deliver results in the short term, eventually the search engines always find out and often exact harsh punishments on the perpetrators. Google have been known to remove the Page Rank of websites which utilize these methods, causing them to essentially drop out of the search results. For the short term gain, is that worth it?
Another reason to avoid being sucked into these scams is that the information presented is almost always available elsewhere for free. There are a large number of websites available which provide quality information about website promotion that charge nothing, such as Experienced People.net. It is highly likely, of course, that a number of people selling eBooks have simply repackaged this information and are making $60 or more every time someone buys this information from them, easy money as they have put in very little effort themselves.
In order to protect yourself from these scams, be vigilant. There are books that can be ordered from reputable sites such as Amazon which are far more likely to be helpful, and they are also most times cheaper than the eBooks on offer.
Web promotion and market research
Web promotion entails a lot of hard work in dividing up your audience, figuring out where they reside in, and marketing to them online from the comfort of your own home. Think of your computer and web server as a command-and-control center where you initiate web promotion schemes that are designed to win the battle against other Internet marketers vying for your traffic.
Assume that you have a fantastic website to offer your visitors. It may contain a wealth of information about a specialist subject and generate income for you from contextual ads or affiliate programs. It may be selling a fantastic product that you have spent a lot of time and effort developing. Either way, without traffic, both of these examples will be a huge waste of time and money if all of your potential visitors are being drawn to competing sites. It can be even worse as a webmaster to know that your website or product is far superior to that of your competitors, and that your visitors are being taken away by a better marketing effort than your own.
Successful marketing means that any advertising effort you conduct, be that careful SEO or by paying for an advertising campaign, brings about a successful return of visitors for the time or money you have put in. In order to be successful in your marketing efforts, you must be able to master all of the aspects of website promotion.
The fastest and most effective way of bringing traffic to your website is through the use of pay per click advertising. Once you have set up a simple campaign using Google Adwords, traffic will almost instantly start coming to your site from relevant search terms or contextual ad placement on Adsense enabled websites. However, there is a large amount of competition for space on Adwords, so in the more tightly competitive niches, a higher bid per click will likely be necessary in order to gain significant amount of traffic. This is fine; as long as you can afford it and as long as you believe that a large amount of people following these links will buy the product that you are selling or convert on any affiliate links that you may have.
SEO is also highly important in promoting any website. Get into contact with other relevant website operators, try and get linked to on some popular blogs, all of these will drive interested visitors to your site. Furthermore, the more links you have from sites which are considered ‘important’ by Google, the higher you will be in their indexes. This cannot be underestimated, as Google is by far and wide the most popular search engine used by people today, and will be responsible for bringing in a massive, perhaps almost all, of your search engine based traffic.
A great way to gauge the success of your marketing efforts is to use Google Analytics. By installing this on the pages on your website, preferably all of them, you will be able to gather a wealth of information about your visitors. You will know where in the world they are, how long they spend on a given page on the site, and vitally, where they came from. This way, you can see which of your advertising campaigns are working, and which would appear to be underperforming and need a possible tweak in order to bring in the amount of traffic that they have the potential to.
When promoting a website, it is always necessary to remember that it is not a one off process. Constant monitoring of the efforts are needed, and updating when necessary will ensure that you continue to bring in visitors and not lose out to your competitors.
